Open Houses, Receptions & Celebrations


  • Reception to honor Borden Plant employees following the plant’s closing (June 2006, before museum’s renovation)
  • Grand Reopening open house, following completion of interior renovation (December 2008)
  • VIP open house, to increase awareness of the museum by local officials, and homemade ice cream (July 2009)
  • Farewell party for Chester McKee, longtime museum trustee and supporter (September 2009, Bill Poe’s home)
  • Party to honor MSU landscape architecture students and faculty for rain garden/phase 1 construction (April 2010, Bill Poe’s home)
  • Open houses for openings of rotating exhibits (ongoing)
  • Night at the Museum celebrations: cookouts and free outdoor movies, hosted by MSU landscape architecture students (ongoing)
  • Garden party to honor volunteers who helped with museum activities (May 2011, Mike and Wanda Thorne’s home)
  • Opening reception for My Oktibbeha children’s photo exhibit (May 2011)
  • GSDP dedication of Oktibbeha County’s Mississippi Blues Trail marker, located on the museum’s grounds (November 2011)
  • Celebration honoring museum supporter Stuart Vance upon the publication of his book Aviation in the Golden Triangle (November 2011, Bill Poe’s home)
  • Chili supper to show appreciation to MSU students/faculty and desk volunteers (April 2012, Suzy and Jim Turner’s home)
  • Mississippi Department of Archives and History Board of Directors visit to museum (October 2012)
  • Pizza lunch to show appreciation to MSU landscape architecture students/faculty for their work on the pavilion, donated by Friends of the Museum (December 2012, on site)

* Protocol for museums prohibits food, drinks, and live plant materials inside museums. Since the museum’s interior renovation, refreshments are served outdoors at open houses and receptions. Celebratory parties are held at private locations.

MUSEUM HOURS:

Tours are encouraged and available by special arrangement.

Volunteers are present whenever the museum is open.

June-July-August
The temporary display for the summer (June-July-August) will be seashells, with related games TBA

A temporary exhibit celebrating OCH Regional Medical Center’s 40th anniversary includes a birthing-room infant warmer (incubator), an antique wheelchair, and a vintage nurse’s cap and cape. This display is located near the permanent medical exhibit.

 


OPPORTUNITIES:

The Friends of the Museum (FOM) membership drive is in process. If you would like to join the Friends but didn’t get an information packet in the mail, you can obtain a membership envelope at the museum or you can download a form from the FOM page at this website.

The 2013 fund-raiser Denim & Diamonds will be held Friday, August 9, 6 p.m. Please mark your calendars.

RESOURCES:

A $10 DVD of the Feb. 22, 2012 Needmore Community program is for sale at the museum.

Ruth Morgan’s “From Days Past” articles and photos, which appeared weekly in the Starkville Daily News, can be accessed at library.msstate.edu/localhistory.
